About the crop

Pineapple is a tropical fruit that reaches the Turkish market mainly through imports. There are trial plantings under cover in Antalya (Alanya) and Mersin.

Growing difficulty: Hard It needs a tropical climate and is extremely frost-sensitive; there is no commercial-scale production in Turkey yet.

Climate

Needs a hot, humid tropical climate. Temperatures below 7°C cause chilling injury, and unripe fruit is more susceptible.

Growing regions

TurkStat crop statistics have no production item for pineapple; with no commercial production in Turkey, the domestic market relies largely on imports.

Cultivation

Trial production under cover is carried out in Antalya (Alanya) and Mersin; the Alata Horticultural Research Institute of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry has published a leaflet on growing pineapple.

Harvest calendar

Imported fruit is on the market all year round.

Storage

Green (unripe) fruit keeps for 2–3 weeks at 10°C and 85–95% relative humidity, and generally for 2–4 weeks at 10°C. Below 7°C is the chilling-injury threshold.
