About the crop

Grapefruit is a smaller-volume species in Turkish citrus production than orange, mandarin and lemon; three quarters of output comes from Adana.

Growing difficulty: Moderate It is among the most cold-sensitive citrus species, at risk of frost in the orchard and chilling injury in storage.

Climate
Prefers the warm parts of the Mediterranean climate with mild winters; it is more cold-sensitive than mandarin and orange.
Growing regions
Adana leads Turkish production (75.9%), followed by Mersin (14.6%) and Hatay (3.5%), with Antalya at 2.8% (TurkStat, 2024). Total national output is about 150,000 tonnes.
Cultivation
Grown in open-field citrus orchards; the main production area is Çukurova, with limited production in Antalya.
Harvest calendar
Flowering is in spring (March–April); harvest runs from November to March depending on variety.
Main challenges
  • Citrus mealybug (Planococcus citri)
  • Spider mites and other mites
  • Green mould (Penicillium) and Alternaria rot in storage
  • Chilling injury (pitting, rind discolouration)
Storage
California and Arizona grapefruit is stored at 14–15°C for 4–6 weeks, Florida and Texas grapefruit at 10°C; 95% relative humidity is recommended. Being cold-sensitive, it should not be taken below 10°C on long journeys; conditioning at 15–18°C for 5–7 days can reduce chilling injury.
