About the crop

Kiwifruit is a relatively new fruit in Turkey whose output has risen fast in recent years, mainly in the Marmara and Black Sea regions.

Growing difficulty: Moderate If the chilling requirement is not met, flowering suffers; grey mould is a major risk in storage.

Climate

Needs a mild, humid climate. It requires an average of 400–600 hours of chilling below 7.2°C; fruit is damaged at −2°C, and the growing season needs at least 260 frost-free days.

Growing regions

Bursa leads Turkish production (20.2%), followed by Yalova (15.6%), Samsun (14.7%) and Mersin (12.9%) (TurkStat, 2024). Total national output is about 92,000 tonnes.

Cultivation

Grown in the open field, usually on pergola (T-bar, cordon) systems. It is not common in Antalya; the main production is in the Marmara and Black Sea regions.

Harvest calendar

Flowers in May; harvest is in October–November, and the fruit is softened in storage before it reaches consumers.

Main challenges

• Grey mould (Botrytis cinerea) — the main storage rot
• Root rot (Phytophthora)
• Bacterial canker (Pseudomonas syringae pv. actinidiae)
• Frost during flowering and early fruit set

Storage

At 0°C and 90–95% relative humidity, with proper postharvest handling, it keeps good quality for 4–5 months. In controlled atmosphere (1–2% O2, 3–5% CO2, 0°C) storage life extends to about 6 months.
