About the crop

Broccoli is a cool-season vegetable whose production in Turkey has grown in recent years; about half of the national crop comes from İzmir.

Growing difficulty: Moderate Heads must be cut in a narrow window before the florets open, and the plant is sensitive to heat.

Climate

Growth is best at 15–20°C. Above 25°C heads loosen and bolt, below 10°C growth slows, and mature heads are sensitive to frosts below −1/−2°C.

Growing regions

İzmir leads Turkish production (49.4%), followed by Bursa (9.7%), Samsun (9.1%) and Manisa (9.1%) (TurkStat, 2024). Total national output is about 132,000 tonnes.

Cultivation

Grown largely in the open field; Antalya has winter open-field production.

Harvest calendar

In Antalya seedlings are planted in October and harvested from December to February. In colder regions the summer crop is planted in April–May and harvested in August–September.

Main challenges

• Aphids and caterpillars
• Black rot (Xanthomonas campestris)
• Boron deficiency (hollow, browning stems)
• Bolting under heat stress

Storage

Keeps for at least a month at 0°C and 95–100% relative humidity; this falls to about 14 days at 5°C and about 5 days at 10°C.
