About the crop

Radish is a fast-growing root vegetable in demand all year round; at the market the main types traded are small round radish (fındık turp) and red radish.

Growing difficulty: Easy The short 25–40 day growing period keeps risk low; the main problem is roots turning woody and pungent in hot weather.

Climate

Growth is best at 10–21°C. Above 25°C radishes turn pungent and bolt; young plants tolerate light frost.

Growing regions

For red radish, Osmaniye leads Turkish production (74.6%), followed by Adana (9.1%) and Konya (2.7%) (TurkStat, 2024). Total national output is about 165,000 tonnes.

Cultivation

Grown both in the open field and under cover (greenhouses, tunnels); thanks to its short cycle several crops a year are possible. In Antalya protected production is common, especially in winter.

Harvest calendar

In Antalya protected crops are sown and harvested continuously from October to March; in the open field the main seasons are spring (March–April) and autumn (September–October).

Main challenges

• Root cracking from rapid growth and uneven watering
• Soil pests (mole crickets, wireworms)
• Bolting and woodiness under heat stress
• Alternaria leaf spot

Storage

At 0°C and 95–100% relative humidity, bunched radishes with leaves keep for 1–2 weeks and topped radishes for 3–4 weeks.
