About the crop

Fresh sweetcorn is eaten on the cob in summer and is widely grown in Çukurova and the Aegean. Sugars turn to starch quickly after harvest, so speed through the market chain is decisive.

Growing difficulty: Moderate The crop itself is easy to grow, but quality drops very fast after harvest, which makes logistics difficult.

Climate

Growth is best at 18–24°C; germination and growth stop below 10°C. Frost at 0°C or below kills the plant.

Cultivation

Grown mainly in the open field and widespread in Çukurova (Adana, Osmaniye), the Aegean and Marmara. There is small-scale local production in Antalya.

Harvest calendar

Sown in March–April, or in February under glass or tunnels for an early crop; harvest comes 65–90 days after sowing, between June and August. In Çukurova it is also grown as a second crop.

Main challenges

• European corn borer (Ostrinia nubilalis) and cotton bollworm (Helicoverpa armigera)
• Fusarium ear rot
• Lodging from wind and overwatering
• Poor pollination in prolonged drought or extreme heat

Storage

Keeps for about 2 weeks at most at 0°C and 95–98% relative humidity. Sugar loss speeds up as temperature rises, so rapid precooling straight after harvest is essential.
