About the crop

Tomatoes are one of the largest items in Turkey's vegetable output. The Mediterranean coast, Antalya in particular, is the main supply hub for both the domestic market and exports, and tomatoes trade at the wholesale market all year round.

Growing difficulty: Moderate The plant tolerates a wide range of climates, but it needs pruning, trellising, regular disease monitoring and investment in greenhouses.

Climate

Growth is best at 22–26°C. Below 15°C and above 35°C fruit set becomes irregular, and below 14°C ripening slows down. The plant is frost-sensitive and is killed outright at −2°C.

Growing regions

Antalya leads Turkish production (19.6%), followed by Bursa (11.5%) and Manisa (8.2%); Konya, İzmir and Mersin are also major producers (TurkStat, 2023). Total national output is 13.3 million tonnes.

Cultivation

In Antalya most tomatoes are grown under glass; the Kumluca–Finike–Demre–Kaş belt is the densest greenhouse area. Open-field crops are also grown in summer.

Harvest calendar

Winter greenhouse crops are planted in August–September; the first harvest starts between November and February and can continue until June. Spring crops are planted in January–February and harvested in April–July, 7–11 weeks after transplanting.

• Whitefly (Bemisia tabaci) and the tomato yellow leaf curl virus (TYLCV) it spreads
• Powdery mildew and late blight
• Root-knot nematodes

Storage

Ripen at 18–21°C and 90–95% relative humidity. Fruit held below 10°C for more than two weeks, or at 5°C for more than 6–8 days, shows chilling injury: poor colour, blotching and decay.
