About the crop

Cucumbers are one of the main greenhouse vegetables, in steady demand all year both for fresh use and for pickling.

Growing difficulty: Moderate They grow fast and are ready to pick quickly, but are sensitive to swings in humidity and temperature and to downy mildew.

Climate

A warm-season crop with no frost tolerance. Seedlings do best at 20–24°C by day and 18–20°C at night; during the growing period the ideal is 26–30°C by day and 18–20°C at night.

Cultivation

Mostly grown under glass; in Antalya's Kumluca–Finike–Demre–Kaş belt it is one of the main greenhouse vegetables alongside tomatoes, peppers and aubergines.

Harvest calendar

Because the crop cycle is short, several sowings a year are possible. The Samsun Provincial Directorate of Agriculture recommends the second week of February for spring sowing and the second week of July for autumn sowing.

Main challenges

• Powdery mildew and downy mildew (Pseudoperonospora cubensis)
• Whitefly
• Root-knot nematodes
• Misshapen fruit caused by poor pollination or nutrition

Storage

Store at 10–13°C and 80–90% relative humidity. Below 10°C, chilling injury — water-soaked spots, pitting and rapid decay — develops within 2–3 days; sensitivity varies by variety.
