About the crop

Green beans are a pulse vegetable eaten in large quantities in summer; picking is labour-intensive and the pods spoil quickly.

Growing difficulty: Moderate Beans are very sensitive to cold, harvesting takes a lot of labour and the produce deteriorates fast.

Climate

A mild-to-warm climate crop with no frost tolerance. The ideal range is 18–25°C; above 30°C pods drop before they develop, and at 2–3°C the plant is badly damaged.

Cultivation

Grown in Antalya both in greenhouses and in open fields, where it is a common summer vegetable.

Harvest calendar

Sowing requires a soil temperature of at least 10°C; the Samsun Provincial Directorate of Agriculture recommends early April. Seeds germinate in 7–10 days and picking begins within 2–3 months.

Storage

Expect a shelf life of 8–12 days at 5–7.5°C. Beans are chill-sensitive: below 5°C they develop an opaque discolouration, and after long storage at 5–7.5°C rusty brown spots appear.
