About the crop

Lettuce is a leafy vegetable traded at the wholesale market all year; curly, flat-leaf and iceberg types serve different markets.

Growing difficulty: Moderate It needs cool weather; in heat the risk of bolting and quality loss is high, and it wilts quickly.

Climate

A cool-season crop. The best temperature for growth is around 25°C (20–30°C); 20°C is the upper limit for head formation and 7°C the lower limit for growth. Some varieties tolerate down to −5°C.

Growing regions

Ankara leads Turkish production (16.6%), followed by Adana (12.7%) and Antalya (9.2%) (TurkStat, 2024). Total national output is about 603,000 tonnes.

Cultivation

In Antalya lettuce is grown in greenhouses and open fields in winter and in cooler microclimates in summer; the main season is winter and spring.

Harvest calendar

Antalya has four growing cycles: the spring crop is harvested in May–June, the autumn crop in October–November, the winter crop in November–December and the greenhouse crop in February–March.

Storage

Iceberg lettuce keeps for 21–28 days at 0°C and 90–98% humidity. Leaf and romaine lettuce last about 21 days at 0°C and 14 days at 5°C; low humidity speeds up yellowing.
