About the crop

Aubergine (eggplant) is a staple of Mediterranean cooking, and Antalya stands out in both greenhouse and open-field production.

Growing difficulty: Moderate It needs a lot of warmth and is sensitive to cold and to sudden drops in temperature.

Climate

The ideal is 25–30°C by day and 15–20°C at night. When nights fall below 15°C, fruit set suffers and colour fades; growth stops below 8°C and the plant dies at −1°C.

Growing regions

Antalya leads Turkish production (27.9%), followed by Mersin (17.3%) and Adana (4.9%) (TurkStat, 2021). Total national output is about 833,000 tonnes.

Cultivation

Antalya grows aubergines both in greenhouses (the Kumluca–Finike–Demre–Kaş belt) and in open fields.

Storage

No chilling injury occurs at 10°C. At lower temperatures pitting and decay set in quickly: after 12 days at 7.2°C, 6–7 days at 5°C and 1–2 days at 0°C. Fruit harvested in cool weather is more cold-tolerant.
