About the crop

At the wholesale market "squash" usually means summer squash (courgette), a fast-moving product that is sold and eaten quickly. Winter pumpkin is a separate market segment.

Growing difficulty: Easy It grows fast, has a short cycle and adapts easily to different conditions; the downside is a short shelf life.

Climate
A warm-season crop that grows best at 20–25°C and suffers cold shock at 0°C. Summer squash can set fruit at temperatures as low as 15°C.
Growing regions
Mersin leads Turkish production (37.9%), followed by Antalya (18.5%) and Ankara (3.9%) (TurkStat, 2024). Summer squash, seed squash and pumpkin together total about 742,000 tonnes.
Cultivation
Widely grown in Antalya, both in greenhouses and in open fields.

  • Powdery mildew
  • Zucchini yellow mosaic virus
  • Whitefly
  • Misshapen fruit caused by poor pollination
Storage
Store summer squash at 5–10°C and 95% humidity; more than 1–2 days below 5°C causes pitting and browning. Shelf life is usually under 10 days.
