About the crop

Peppers come in many types — bell, long green, kapya, çarliston, üçburun and hot chilli — and sell widely both as fresh produce and for paste and drying.

Growing difficulty: Moderate The range of types makes marketing more complex, and the plant is sensitive to temperature swings and viruses.

Climate
The ideal temperature is 20–25°C. Below 8°C flower buds stop forming, above 35°C growth slows, and the plant dies below 0°C.
Growing regions
Antalya leads Turkish production (22.6%), followed by Çanakkale (11.3%), Bursa (9.0%) and Adana (8.1%) (TurkStat, 2024). Output across all types is about 3.4 million tonnes.
Cultivation
In Antalya peppers are grown mainly in greenhouses; çarliston and long green types are also widely grown in open fields.
Main challenges
  • Bacterial spot (Xanthomonas)
  • Spider mites and virus-carrying thrips
  • Fusarium and Verticillium wilt
  • Sunscald
Storage
Bell peppers keep for 3–5 weeks at 7–10°C and 90–95% humidity; below 7°C chilling injury causes pitting and discolouration. Long green and hot peppers can be held for 3–5 weeks at 7.5°C, or up to two weeks at 5°C, without damage.
