About the crop

The apple is one of Turkey's most widely produced fruits, with about 4.4 million tonnes in 2024. Golden, Starking and Granny Smith are the leading varieties at home and for export.

Growing difficulty: Moderate Growing practice is well established and standardised, but scab, powdery mildew and fire blight need regular control.

Climate

A deciduous temperate species that needs winter chilling. On the Mediterranean and Aegean coasts at 300–800 m, summer and autumn varieties needing 600–1,200 chill hours are preferred; inland, long-keeping winter varieties needing 1,500–2,500 hours are grown.

Growing regions

Isparta leads Turkish production (23.1%), followed by Karaman (15.5%), Niğde (14.0%) and Antalya (10.4%) (TurkStat, 2024).

Cultivation

Grown in intensive open orchards on dwarfing and semi-dwarfing rootstocks; production is centred on the Lakes Region, Central Anatolia and the Mediterranean uplands.

Storage

Chill-sensitive varieties are stored above 1°C and non-sensitive ones at 0–1°C, at 85–95% relative humidity. Because 0°C can cause chilling injury in some seasons, gradual cooling is recommended.
