About the crop

The watermelon is one of summer's highest-volume crops, grown on a large scale in provinces with broad plains. TurkStat classifies it as a vegetable.

Growing difficulty: Moderate It needs a lot of land and water, calls for precautions against Fusarium wilt and the melon ladybird, and must be protected from chilling injury after harvest.

Growing regions
Adana leads Turkish production (17.6%), followed by Antalya (11.3%), Bursa (8.9%) and Muş (6.3%) (TurkStat, 2024). Total national output is about 3.2 million tonnes.
Cultivation
Mostly grown in open fields, with low tunnels and mulch used for earliness. In Antalya early protected crops are grown alongside open-field production.
Main challenges
  • Fusarium wilt (Fusarium oxysporum)
  • Melon ladybird (Epilachna chrysomelina)
  • Spider mites and aphids
  • Powdery and downy mildew
Storage
7.2°C and 85–90% humidity are common for short transport and storage, but fruit held at that temperature for more than a few days starts to suffer chilling injury. For better results 10–15.5°C and 90% humidity are recommended; storage life is limited to about three weeks.
