About the crop

Grapes are grown in Turkey in a wide range of varieties for the table, for drying and for wine; the Aegean, and Manisa in particular, dominates production.

Growing difficulty: Moderate Establishing and pruning a vineyard takes skill, and downy mildew, powdery mildew and the grape berry moth need regular control.

Growing regions

Manisa leads Turkish production (32.8%), followed by Mersin (9.2%) and Denizli (8.5%) (TurkStat, 2024). Mersin leads in seeded table grapes, while Manisa leads in seedless table grapes (56.5%) and seedless drying grapes (87.5%).

Cultivation

Grown in open vineyards, mostly on trellis systems; south-facing slopes near the sea suit early table grapes.

Harvest calendar

Vines flower in May; harvest runs from August to October depending on the variety.

Main challenges

• Downy mildew
• Powdery mildew (oidium)
• European grapevine moth (Lobesia botrana), with 3–4 generations a year
• Grey mould (Botrytis cinerea)

Storage

Table grapes are stored at 0–1°C and 95% relative humidity. Because grey mould can grow even at −0.5°C, sulphur dioxide (SO2) treatment after harvest is standard practice.
