About the crop

In Turkey bananas are grown almost entirely on the Antalya and Mersin coast, largely under cover, and domestic fruit competes with imports at home. The 2024 crop was about 875,000 tonnes.

Growing difficulty: Hard As a tropical plant it is very sensitive to cold and needs greenhouse investment and year-round climate control.

Climate

Needs tropical to subtropical warmth and has no frost tolerance at all; below 13°C chilling injury sets in within hours to days. In summer, ventilation and shading are recommended to keep greenhouse temperatures below 34°C.

Growing regions

Antalya leads Turkish production (46.4%), closely followed by Mersin (45.9%) and then Adana (5.8%) (TurkStat, 2024).

Cultivation

Production is largely in greenhouses. The traditional open plantations of Alanya, Gazipaşa and Anamur have steadily moved under cover, a shift accelerated by public support schemes.

Main challenges

• Yellow and black Sigatoka leaf spot
• Root-knot and spiral nematodes
• Banana weevil (Cosmopolites sordidus)
• Chilling injury in greenhouses in winter

Storage

Bananas do not belong in the cold chain; commercial fruit is shipped and stored at around 13–14°C. Depending on the variety, 7 days at 10°C or 21 days at 12.5°C cause skin darkening, browning of the vascular tissue and abnormal ripening.
