About the crop

The strawberry is a delicate, short-lived fruit that stands out for early-season protected cropping along the Mediterranean. Turkey produced about 606,000 tonnes in 2024.

Growing difficulty: Hard It spoils quickly, needs frequent picking and an unbroken cold chain, and requires close monitoring for grey mould and spider mites.

Climate
Needs a mild climate and is sensitive to heat and direct sun. Protected cultivation makes it easier to control temperature and humidity.
Growing regions
Mersin leads Turkish production (22.4%), followed by Aydın (18.6%), Konya (13.2%) and Çanakkale (7.4%) (TurkStat, 2024).
Cultivation
Mostly grown under cover — greenhouses and tunnels — on raised beds or in soilless systems; protected strawberry growing is common in Antalya.
Main challenges
  • Grey mould (Botrytis cinerea)
  • Spider mites
  • Root rots on wet, heavy soils
  • Frost damage during flowering
Storage
Store at 0°C; shelf life at 0–5°C is 7–10 days depending on variety, while at 20°C deterioration is about ten times faster. Cooling should start within an hour of picking; packaging with 10–15% CO2 suppresses grey mould.
