About the crop

The pomegranate is one of Antalya's signature fruits, eaten fresh and also used for pomegranate molasses and juice. Turkey produced about 703,000 tonnes in 2024.

Growing difficulty: Moderate Care is fairly simple, but the long flowering period means harvesting in 2–3 rounds, and pests entering through the fruit crown are a risk.

Growing regions
Antalya leads Turkish production (25.0%), followed by Mersin (17.0%), Adana (11.5%) and Muğla (8.8%) (TurkStat, 2024).
Cultivation
Grown in open orchards; in Antalya mostly in irrigated orchards.
Harvest calendar
Flowering lasts from spring into summer, so fruit ripens at different times. Harvest usually starts in late August and runs until mid-November.
Main challenges
  • Carob moth (larvae enter through the crown)
  • Mediterranean fruit fly
  • Pomegranate aphid, citrus mealybug and pomegranate whitefly
  • Brown spot and fruit rots (Aspergillus, Penicillium)
Storage
Keeps for up to two months at 5°C; for longer storage 7.2°C is preferred to avoid chilling injury. The fruit is prone to chilling injury that browns and pits the skin, and needs 90–95% relative humidity to prevent water loss.
