About the crop

The avocado is a high-value subtropical fruit that has spread quickly along the Mediterranean coast in recent years; nearly all of Turkey's output comes from Antalya and Mersin.

Growing difficulty: Hard Its cold sensitivity makes frost a serious risk, and Phytophthora root rot demands careful drainage.

Climate

Needs a subtropical climate and is frost-sensitive. During a 2004 frost in Antalya, when temperatures fell to −3°C, Lula, Reed and Pinkerton proved very sensitive, Hass sensitive, and Bacon, Ettinger, Fuerte and Zutano only lightly affected; heavy fruit drop followed 7–15 days later.

Growing regions

Antalya leads Turkish production (55.3%), followed by Mersin (43.5%); every other province accounts for less than 1% (TurkStat, 2024). Total national output is about 64,500 tonnes.

Cultivation

Open orchards are the norm; some growers use windbreaks, frost fans and sprinklers against frost. Protected cultivation is limited.

Main challenges

• Phytophthora root rot (with excess moisture and poor drainage)
• Anthracnose
• Frost damage (starts below 0°C, severe towards −3°C)
• Fruit drop after frost

Storage

Hass avocados keep for 2–4 weeks at 6–8°C; in a controlled atmosphere (2% O2, 3–5% CO2) at 5–7°C they can be held for up to 9 weeks and then ripened at 20°C. Chilling injury shows as uneven ripening, darkened flesh and pitted skin.
