About the crop
Figs are a crop in which Turkey leads the world in fresh and dried fig production and exports; more than half of output comes from Aydın.
Growing difficulty: Moderate The tree is sensitive to low winter temperatures, and field and storage pests such as grey mould and warehouse moth threaten quality.
- Growing regions
- Aydın leads Turkish production (55.9%), followed by İzmir (22.1%) and Bursa (8.8%) (TurkStat, 2024). Total national output is about 375,000 tonnes.
- Cultivation
- Grown in open-field orchards, mainly in the Aegean; there is limited fresh fig production in Antalya.
- Harvest calendar
- Harvest runs from July to October depending on variety and fig type; for dried figs it is concentrated in August–September.
- Main challenges

- Grey mould (Botrytis cinerea)
- Root rot (Rosellinia necatrix)
- Warehouse moth in dried figs (Ephestia cautella)
- Mites (Tetranychus urticae, Aceria ficus)
- Storage
- Store at −1 to 0°C and 90–95% relative humidity; rapid forced-air cooling to 0°C is strongly recommended. Market life is 1–2 weeks in air and 3–4 weeks in controlled atmosphere.
