About the crop
Melons are one of Turkey's main summer crops and are eaten mostly fresh. Production is spread across many provinces, and no single province has more than 10% of the total.
Growing difficulty: Easy Apart from its need for heat, its cultural requirements are flexible; it is, however, sensitive to chilling injury.
- Climate
- Needs a hot, sunny climate and has no frost tolerance.
- Growing regions
- Adana leads Turkish production (9.7%), followed by Denizli (6.8%), Antalya (6.3%) and Konya (6.2%) (TurkStat, 2024). Total national output is about 1.48 million tonnes.
- Cultivation
- Grown mainly in the open field; in some early areas plastic tunnels and protected cultivation are used for an early crop.
- Harvest calendar
- Sown in March–May depending on region; harvest runs from June to September.

- Fusarium wilt (Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. melonis)

- Chilling injury after harvest
- Storage
- Netted (cantaloupe-type) melons keep for 10–14 days at 2–7°C and 95% relative humidity. Below 2°C chilling injury appears: pitting, reddish-brown discolouration, surface decay and failure to ripen.
