About the crop
With its easy-peel skin and sweet flavour, the mandarin is the main fresh citrus of the winter months and holds a significant share of both the domestic market and exports.
Growing difficulty: Moderate Care is similar to oranges, but the delicate peel calls for extra caution during harvest and transport.
- Growing regions
- Adana leads Turkish production (45%), followed by Hatay (33%), Mersin (10%) and İzmir (6%) (TurkStat, 2023). Output of about 3 million tonnes in 2023 is expected to fall to 2 million tonnes in 2024.
- Cultivation
- Grown in open orchards; in Antalya it shares the citrus belt of Kumluca, Finike and Manavgat with other citrus species.

- Storage
- Keeps for 2–6 weeks at 5–8°C and 90–95% relative humidity, depending on variety and maturity. Prolonged exposure below 5°C increases chilling injury.
