About the crop

The lemon is a citrus fruit used heavily in cooking and the food industry (juice, essential oil), and thanks to its many varieties it is harvested almost all year. The lime is a small-fruited relative of tropical origin.

Growing difficulty: Moderate The range of varieties allows harvesting almost year-round; on the other hand, peel diseases in storage and frost in the orchard are real risks.

Climate

Needs a subtropical climate. It is among the more cold-tolerant citrus species, but frosts below −2/−3°C are still risky.

Growing regions

Mersin leads Turkish production (46%), followed by Adana (40%), and Hatay and Muğla (6% each) (TurkStat, 2023); 94% of output comes from the Mediterranean region. The 2024 crop was about 1.73 million tonnes.

Cultivation

Grown in open orchards; in Antalya it sits alongside other citrus species.

Storage

Can be stored for up to six months at 12–14°C and about 90% relative humidity, depending on variety and maturity — warmer and longer than other citrus. Removing ethylene from the store slows rotting and ageing.
