About the crop
Leek is a cool-season vegetable of the onion family, grown for its stem and leaves; it is one of the important winter vegetables at the market.
Growing difficulty: Moderate It needs a long 4–5 month season, deep fertile soil and earthing up by hand to blanch the stem.
- Growing regions
- İzmir leads Turkish production (21.2%), followed by Mersin (13.0%) and Samsun (12.9%) (TurkStat, 2024). Total national output is about 151,000 tonnes.
- Cultivation
- Grown in the open field; greenhouse production is uncommon. The main areas are the Aegean, Mediterranean and Black Sea coasts; in Antalya it is grown on a limited scale as a winter open-field crop.
- Main challenges

- Onion fly (Delia antiqua)
- Rot in the blanched stem under excess moisture
- Storage
- Keeps for 2–3 months at 0°C and 95–100% relative humidity.
