About the crop

Nectarines are the smooth-skinned form of the peach; botanically they belong to the same species, and in Turkey they are grown for the fresh market.

Growing difficulty: Moderate They share the peach's frost sensitivity and its risk of rapid deterioration after harvest.

Climate

As they belong to the same species as the peach, their climate needs and frost sensitivity are similar.

Growing regions

Mersin leads Turkish production (44.3%), followed by Bursa (19.9%), Çanakkale (14.7%) and Adana (10.3%) (TurkStat, 2024). Total national output is about 356,000 tonnes.

Cultivation

Grown in open-field orchards under conditions similar to peaches.

Harvest calendar

Flowering is in March–April; harvest runs from June to August depending on variety.

Storage

Postharvest sources treat it together with peach: optimum storage is −1 to 0°C and 90–95% relative humidity. Maximum market life for nectarine varieties ranges from 1 to 7 weeks.
