About the crop

Pears are a widely grown pome fruit in Turkey; table varieties such as Santa Maria, Williams, Ankara and Deveci lead the market. Antalya is the second-largest producer after Bursa.

Growing difficulty: Moderate Fire blight, a quarantine disease, and frost risk in some areas make production harder.

Climate

Needs a temperate climate; it is more cold-hardy than apricot.

Growing regions

Bursa leads Turkish production (42.7%), followed by Antalya (16.4%), with Sakarya and Çanakkale at 2.4% each (TurkStat, 2024). Total national output is about 630,000 tonnes.

Cultivation

Grown in open-field orchards. In Antalya, pears are grown in high districts such as Korkuteli and Elmalı, at about 1,000–1,150 m, alongside apples, peaches, apricots, cherries, sour cherries and plums.

Harvest calendar

Flowering is in March–April depending on variety; harvest runs from July to October depending on variety.

• Pear lace bug (Stephanitis pyri)
• Red pear scale (Epidiaspis leperii)

Storage

Most pears are stored at −1°C and 90–94% relative humidity; in d'Anjou and Bartlett, storage life at −1°C is 35–40% longer than at 0°C. Intermediate temperatures of 2.5–10°C harm some varieties, and because moisture loss is rapid, humidity should be kept above 90%.
