About the crop

Peaches are one of the most widespread stone fruits in Turkey; besides the fresh market they supply the canning industry.

Growing difficulty: Moderate The fruit softens quickly after harvest, and chilling-injury risks such as mealiness and internal browning need managing.

Climate

Where winter temperatures fall to −18/−20°C, buds and shoots freeze, and at −25°C trees may be damaged. Frost sensitivity is high during flowering.

Growing regions

Mersin leads Turkish production (22.8%), followed by Çanakkale (15.9%), Bursa (13.0%) and Denizli (9.5%) (TurkStat, 2024). Total national output is about 823,000 tonnes.

Cultivation

Grown in open-field orchards; in Antalya it is grown with other stone fruits in high districts such as Korkuteli and Elmalı.

Harvest calendar

Flowering is in March–April; harvest runs from June to September depending on variety.

Storage

Store at −1 to 0°C and 90–95% relative humidity; the freezing point varies between −3 and −1.5°C with sugar content. How chilling injury develops depends on fruit size, storage atmosphere and temperature; in small fruit stored at 0°C it appears later.
