About the crop
Apricots are a strategic crop in which Turkey leads the world in both fresh and dried fruit; production centred on Malatya is the backbone of the apricot economy.
Growing difficulty: Hard Late spring frosts cause large swings in output from year to year; in 2014 yields fell by 65.7%.
- Climate
- Prefers fairly cold winters and hot summers, and needs dry air during ripening; in humid, foggy springs shot hole disease appears. Damage occurs at −15°C at bud swell, −10°C at pink bud and −5.6°C at full bloom.
- Growing regions
- Malatya leads Turkish production (37.8%), followed by Mersin (20.5%), Hatay (7.1%) and Kahramanmaraş (6.7%) (TurkStat, 2022).
- Cultivation
- Grown in open-field orchards. Antalya is not among the top five producing provinces; there is limited production in high districts such as Korkuteli and Elmalı.
- Harvest calendar
- Flowers early, after almond, between late February and March; in Malatya harvest begins in July.
- Main challenges
-
- Shot hole disease (Sclerotinia)
- Brown rot, which causes quality losses in a wet June
- Late spring frosts
- Storage
- Keeps for 1–2 weeks, and 3–4 weeks for some varieties, at −0.5 to 0°C and 90–95% relative humidity; the freezing point is −1.0°C. Susceptible varieties develop chilling injury (gel breakdown, flesh browning) faster at 5°C than at 0°C, so storage at 0°C is recommended.
