About the crop

Plums are a widely grown stone fruit in Turkey; cherry plums (can eriği), Japanese and European plums are eaten fresh, and in some areas plums are also dried.

Growing difficulty: Moderate Early-flowering cherry plums and Japanese plums are vulnerable to late spring frosts, and plum pox (sharka) virus is a serious threat.

Climate

Cherry plums prefer a mild temperate climate, European plums a cool temperate one and Japanese plums a warm temperate one. The chilling requirement below 7.2°C is 400–500 hours for cherry plums, 600 hours for Japanese plums and over 1,000 hours for European plums. Open flowers tolerate −2.2 to −0.6°C and young fruit −1.1 to −0.6°C.

Growing regions

Mersin leads Turkish production (22.9%), followed by Bursa (9.2%) and Antalya (6.6%) (TurkStat, 2024). Total national output is about 376,000 tonnes.

Cultivation

Grown in open-field orchards. It is not fussy about soil; the ideal soil pH is 6.5.

Harvest calendar

Flowering is in March–April depending on variety (cherry and Japanese plums early, European plums later); harvest runs from June to August.

• Plum pox virus (sharka) — quarantine disease
• Plum pockets (Taphrina pruni)
• Brown rot (Monilinia fructigena, Monilia laxa)

Storage

Store at −1.1 to 0°C and 90–95% relative humidity. In late-season plums, internal breakdown can be delayed by storage at −1.1°C, but because the freezing point varies between −2 and −1°C with sugar content, this requires precise thermostat control.
