About the crop

Sweet cherries are one of the fruits in which Turkey leads world production; they are eaten mostly fresh and spoil very quickly.

Growing difficulty: Moderate Flowers and young fruit are very frost-sensitive, and after harvest the fruit must be cooled below 5°C within 4 hours.

Climate

Needs a temperate climate. Flower buds survive down to −2.4°C; open flowers freeze at −2°C and small fruit just after bloom at −1.1°C. A drop to −3.9°C at full bloom causes significant damage.

Growing regions

İzmir leads Turkish production (13.7%), followed by Konya (8.3%), Afyonkarahisar (7.0%) and Manisa (6.3%) (TurkStat, 2024). Total national output is about 726,000 tonnes.

Cultivation

Grown in open-field orchards; protected production is uncommon.

Harvest calendar

Flowering is in March–April; harvest runs from May to August depending on region and altitude: May in early areas, July–August at high altitude.

• Cherry fruit fly (Rhagoletis cerasi)
• Shot hole disease (Stigmina carpophila)
• Rain-induced fruit cracking

Storage

Keeps good quality for 2–4 weeks at −1 to 0°C and above 95% relative humidity. Within 4 hours of harvest it should be cooled below 5°C by room cooling, forced air or hydrocooling.
