About the crop

Cauliflower is a cool-season vegetable, grown as a winter crop on the Mediterranean and Aegean coasts and as a summer crop in the interior and the east. Market supply rises sharply in winter and spring.

Growing difficulty: Moderate Curd formation is sensitive to temperature and day length, so the timing of sowing and transplanting is critical.

Climate

The best temperature for curd formation is 15–20°C. Above 25°C plants bolt and form poor curds; below 10°C growth slows. Young plants tolerate light frost, but a formed curd is damaged by frosts below −2°C.

Growing regions

İzmir leads Turkish production (23.9%), followed by Samsun (22.8%), Mersin (11.4%) and Antalya (9.3%) (TurkStat, 2024). Total national output is about 261,000 tonnes.

Cultivation

Grown mainly in the open field. In Antalya there is winter open-field production, especially around Alanya, Serik and Kumluca.

Harvest calendar

In Antalya seedlings are planted in September–October and harvested from December to March. Where a summer crop is grown, planting is in April–May and harvest in July–August.

Main challenges

• Aphids and caterpillars
• Boron deficiency (browning of the curd)
• Black rot (Xanthomonas campestris)
• Premature curd formation under low-temperature stress

Storage

Store at 0°C and 95–98% relative humidity; even under these conditions storage beyond 3 weeks is not recommended for quality.
