About the crop

The orange is one of Turkey's most important citrus fruits, with two separate markets: table oranges for eating fresh and juicing oranges. Production is concentrated along the Mediterranean coast.

Growing difficulty: Moderate Standard citrus care is enough, but frost risk and postharvest rots need attention.

Climate

Needs a mild subtropical climate; the critical frost threshold is about −2°C, and losses grow with prolonged frost on the tree. As an evergreen it has no chilling requirement, unlike deciduous fruit trees.

Growing regions

Adana leads Turkish production (27%), followed by Antalya (25%), Hatay (21%), and Mersin and Muğla (11% each) (TurkStat, 2023). Output of 2.3 million tonnes in 2023 is expected to fall to about 1.6 million tonnes in 2024.

Cultivation

Grown in open orchards, including on dwarfing and semi-dwarfing rootstocks. In Antalya orchards are common on the coastal plains; protected cultivation is rare.

Main challenges

• Mediterranean fruit fly (Ceratitis capitata)
• Scale insects
• Postharvest green and blue mould (Penicillium digitatum, P. italicum)
• Winter frosts below −2°C

Storage

Can be stored for up to three months at 3–8°C and 90–95% relative humidity, depending on variety and growing area. Temperatures below −2.5°C in transit or storage quickly cause freezing injury.
